What is Distilled Water?

Distilled water is the end-product of the distillation process, which is used to remove the harmful contaminants from the unclean water and leave only water molecules behind.

What is pH?

The completely uncontaminated water has the pH value 7, which is neutral and it means water is neither alkaline nor acidic in nature. Generally, when water has the pH value less than 7, it means it is acidic in nature, and with pH more than 7, it is alkaline properties.

In general, when water has pH value less than 6.5, it can be considered as acidic. Acidic nature means water might contain harmful acidic and corroding substances. Water with acidic properties, water possibly will have metal ions for instance, lead, iron, copper, zinc, and other toxic metals.

Alkalinity refers to the measurement of the capability of the water to fight back against the change occurring in pH due to factors that might turn water acidic. Value of pH and alkalinity is used to evaluate the corrosion level of water.

Usually, completely clean water is not acidic or alkaline in nature and clean distilled water contains the equal number of hydrogen and hydroxyl ions. Acidic rain

Acidic rain can also affect pH of water sources like river, lakes, wetlands, etc. and that can raise the acidity level in natural drinking water sources. This will lower the pH value of these sources. Acid rain occurs due to combination of sulphur dioxide, nitrogen oxide, and water vapors in the air.


Minerals deposits

Minerals in the ground might get mixed with the water and increase the pH value of the water. On the other hand, some mineral rocks like granite do not have any impact of pH of the water.


Water Temperature

Temperature of water also makes an impact on its pH. When temperature of water rises, the pH value comes down, and when temperature of water goes down, the pH value goes up.  As a result, the warmer temperature will get, more acidic the water will become.

When pH level of water is more than 7, it is called alkaline water. This water is known to be very healthy and people has been drinking this water for centuries for health and healing purpose. In addition, you can produce alkaline water at your home by an alkaline filter pitcher.

When pH level of water goes below 7, it is called acidic water. Acidic water is not good for health and can lead to health problems as well. Moreover, acidic water can corrode the pipelines. While acidic water is not good for consumption, it is great for your skin and hair. It can make your hair look glossy and you can manage them easily. In addition, acidic water can also make your skin look fresher and healthful.


Neutral pH Water

When water has the pH value of 7, it is called neutral water, which is neither acidic nor alkaline. Neutral water is also considered as pure water produced through distillation or reverse osmosis method.  If water isn’t pure, but its pH value is 7, you can drink it.

Can pH of Distilled Water Reach the Value of 7.0?

According to experts, distilled water is closest thing to neutral pH water people can get, and it is perfectly harmless to drink. 

The pH value of unadulterated, distilled water is considered as 7. However, instantaneously after distillation, the distilled water becomes an active absorber and as soon as it is exposed to air, it starts absorbing carbon dioxide from the air, and creates carbonic acid.

Because of this, the pH of the distilled water might become 5.8, which means it will become more acidic. While acidic water is expected to be harmful for human body, in some cases acidic water has revealed no impact on health.

In the end, drinking extremely acidic or alkaline distilled water can be damaging to your health. Your drinking water should contain a pH value of 6.5-8.5. However, even inside the suitable range of pH values, marginally high or low pH can lead to unwanted outcomes like water with high pH might have a greasy feel to it, and might have the taste of baking soda.
